Why it works this way

  • Short adjectives add -er/-est; longer adjectives use more/most
  • Irregulars exist: good → better → best, bad → worse → worst

How Spanish expresses comparison differently

  • Spanish has one consistent pattern for comparatives — no -er/-est ending, always a phrase structure
  • The structure works the same regardless of adjective length (no short/long-word split like English)
  • Only a few adjectives are irregular

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Adding -ísimo endings when a simple comparative is meant → ✅ that’s a different structure (absolute superlative, e.g. buenísimo = “extremely good”)
  • ❌ Using más bueno instead of mejor → ✅ mejor is the correct irregular comparative for “better”
  • ❌ Forgetting que in comparisons: más alto tú → ✅ más alto que
  • ❌ Using como instead of que: más alto como tú → ✅ más alto que (que = “than”; como = “as”, only for equal comparisons)

Summary

  • More/less than: más/menos + adjective + que
  • Equal: tan + adjective + como
  • Superlative: el/la/los/las + más/menos + adjective (+ de)
  • Irregulars: mejor (better), peor (worse), mayor (older), menor (younger)
