Por vs Para
The problem
Both por and para can translate as “for” (or “by”) in English. That makes them the most commonly confused preposition pair for English speakers.
They are not interchangeable. Each has distinct uses that reflect different underlying meanings.
Mental model:
por = cause / reason / means / exchange — looking backward at cause or through an action
para = purpose / destination / recipient / deadline — looking forward at a goal
How “for” works in English
In English, the single word “for” handles many distinct logical functions:
- Purpose: “I study for a test.” (goal)
- Recipient: “A gift for you.” (target person)
- Duration: “I slept for eight hours.” (time span)
- Reason: “Thank you for helping me.” (cause)
- Substitution: “I’m working for him today.” (in his place)
Spanish does not use one word for all of these. It splits them strictly between para (forward-looking goals) and por (backward-looking causes and means).
When to use para
para points forward — toward a goal, recipient, destination, or deadline.

When to use por
por points backward at causes, reasons, and exchanges — or through a process, time, or medium.
