Questions
How questions work in English
In English, forming a question usually requires one of these:
- Inversion — swap subject and auxiliary: She is → Is she?
- Do-support — add do/does/did: She eats → Does she eat?
- Question word — add who/what/where/when/why/how: What does she eat?

How Spanish handles questions differently
Key differences
- Spanish uses ¿ ? — inverted question mark at the start, regular at the end
- There is no do-support — Spanish doesn’t add an equivalent of do/does/did
- For yes/no questions, you can simply raise your intonation — the word order often stays the same
- The subject (if included) usually moves after the verb in questions
Yes/No questions in Spanish
You can form a yes/no question by:
- Intonation alone (spoken): ¿Comes arroz? = Do you eat rice?
- Inverting subject and verb: ¿Come María arroz? = Does Maria eat rice?

Question words (interrogatives)
When asking for specific information, use a question word. All Spanish question words carry an accent mark.

¿Qué? vs ¿Cuál?
Both can mean “what” or “which,” but they’re not interchangeable.

Common mistakes
- ❌ Writing ?Hablas español? → ✅ always open with ¿: ¿Hablas español?
- ❌ Adding “do” equivalent: ¿Tú haces hablas español? → ✅ no do-support needed: ¿Hablas español?
- ❌ Dropping accent on question words → ✅ que (that/which) ≠ qué (what?); como (like/as) ≠ cómo (how?)
- ❌ Using ¿Qué before es for identity → ✅ ¿Cuál es tu nombre? (not ¿Qué es tu nombre?)
