Present Tense
What is the present tense? (English)
The present tense describes what is happening now, what happens regularly, or what is generally true.
| Form | Use | Example |
|---|
| Simple present | habits, facts, schedules | She works here. |
| Present continuous | happening right now | She is working right now. |
In English, the present tense barely changes: I eat, you eat, he eats — only the 3rd person singular differs.
English present tense examples

How Spanish handles the present tense differently
Key differences
- Spanish has one present tense that covers both English present forms (“I eat” and “I am eating”)
- Every subject gets a unique verb ending — not just the 3rd person singular
- The verb ending already encodes the subject, so the pronoun is often omitted
The ending pattern (regular verbs)
| Subject | -ar ending | -er ending | -ir ending |
|---|
| yo | -o | -o | -o |
| tú | -as | -es | -es |
| él/ella/usted | -a | -e | -e |
| nosotros | -amos | -emos | -imos |
| vosotros | -áis | -éis | -ís |
| ellos/ustedes | -an | -en | -en |
Formula: strip the infinitive ending, add the subject ending.

| Change | Example | yo | tú | él | nosotros | ellos |
|---|
| o → ue | poder (can) | puedo | puedes | puede | podemos | pueden |
| e → ie | querer (want) | quiero | quieres | quiere | queremos | quieren |
| e → i | pedir (to ask for) | pido | pides | pide | pedimos | piden |
Common mistakes
- ❌ Using only the infinitive form → ✅ conjugate: “Yo hablar” → “Yo hablo”
- ❌ Applying the wrong class endings → ✅ identify -ar/-er/-ir first
- ❌ Using English present continuous (is/am + -ing) → ✅ Spanish simple present covers both: “Como” = “I eat” and “I am eating”
- ❌ Irregular yo forms forgotten → ✅ many verbs have a special yo form: tengo, hago, voy, soy
